Meet the Characters from The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady
By Debbie De Louise
Instead of a blurb, excerpt, or a plot synopsis, character profiles are a great way to introduce readers to a book. Here are some of the characters from The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady: Buttercup Bend Mystery #1. I hope you enjoy meeting them.
Cathy Carter is the main character of The Case of the Cat Crazy Lady. She lives in Buttercup Bend which is a lovely small town in the Catskills of upstate New York with her grandmother, Florence and Siamese cat, Oliver. She co-owns a pet cemetery, Rainbow Gardens, and rescue center, Rainbow Rescues, with her brother, Doug, who lives next door with his pregnant wife, Becky. She and Doug are orphans. They lost their parents five years ago in a car accident. Cathy was injured in the accident and has a scar on her cheek. It wasn’t the only scar she received. She became very shy and withdrawn and found it easier to be around animals. Opening her pet business helped her, as did her friend, Nancy and her work as a photographer for the Buttercup Bugle, the town newspaper.
Florence Wilson, Cathy’s grandmother, is a self-reliant widow who meets a strange yet charismatic man named Howard Hunt at a church square dance. She enjoys needlework and gardening.
Douglas Carter, Cathy’s brother, works at the Buttercup Bend Post Office and is married to Becky. They have two dogs, Max and Millie. Becky is pregnant with their first child.
Maggie Broom, the murder victim, was known in Buttercup Bend as “The Cat Crazy Lady.” She enjoyed playing BINGO but kept to herself and the dozens of indoor and outdoor cats that she cared for. Relatively new in town, she arrived two years ago and had not made many friends before she was found murdered.
Nancy Meyers, Cathy’s best friend, who convinces her to join her in investigating Maggie murder. Nancy is outgoing and likes to flirt. She has her eye on the town’s vet, Michael Graham, and the deputy sheriff, Brian Fitzcullins, while Cathy is interested in her gardener, Steve Jefferson.
Pauline Harding is the publisher of the Buttercup Bugle, the Buttercup Bend newspaper. She’s Cathy and Nancy’s boss and the neighbor of Maggie Broom. Pauline lives above her newspaper office in the house next to Maggie that used to belong to an elderly woman who passed away and left her cat, Oliver, to Cathy. Pauline is known as the town’s “gossip monger.” She’s also the best friend of Florence and the girlfriend of Sheriff Miller. She and Maggie didn’t get along because Maggie’s outdoor cats were always tearing up her garden. She was the one who found Maggie dead and while Cathy doesn’t want to suspect her of killing the Cat Crazy Lady, Nancy has placed her on the suspect list.
Brody Broom, Maggie’s brother, is the prime suspect in the murder. After the will is read, he and his sister aren’t happy with what they are left. Brody has been in trouble with the law since he was 15. Sheriff Miller believes he is guilty of his sister’s murder, but Cathy learns some things about him that make her believe in his innocence.
Gladys Broom, Maggie and Brody’s sister, lost no love on her siblings. She was jealous of Maggie and abused Brody. She hated animals and made it clear that, as much as she’d wanted more of Maggie’s inheritance, she would never take her pets.
Michael Graham is the town’s vet who is often at Rainbow Rescues. Cathy’s friend Nancy thought she was in love with him, but when they dated, things didn’t go as well as she’d hoped. She and Cathy played a game to rate the three eligible Buttercup Bend men, and Cathy was the one who seemed to match up most with Michael even though her gardener, Steve, had asked her out.
Steve Jefferson is a gardener. He tends many of the gardens in Buttercup Bend including Florence’s as well as that of Rainbow Gardens, Cathy’s pet cemetery. He is rather shy around women but finally works up the nerve to ask Cathy out to the church square dance. Afterwards, he tries to kiss her but is interrupted by Nancy.
Brian Fitzcullins is Sheriff Miller’s Deputy Sheriff. Here he is in street clothes. He is a big animal lover and keeps several pets in a tiny apartment in Buttercup Bend. When his old cat, Boots, passes away, he requests a memorial at Rainbow Gardens. He also aids Cathy and Nancy in investigating Maggie’s murder, as he has been given keys to her house to feed her cats until they can be placed at Rainbow Rescues. Nancy once dated him but broke up with him when things got too serious. Now she begins to have second thoughts about that decision.
Some of the other characters who are camera shy include:
Sheriff Leroy Miller who has spiky red hair and dark skin due to his mixed heritage. He is the boyfriend of Pauline Harding, even though she is fifteen years his senior. He is determined to see Brody Broom arrested for the murder of his sister.
Howard Hunt is a mysterious man who showed up at the church square dance and made a move on Florence. They began dating until she was informed that he’d presented himself falsely to her and might be connected to Maggie’s murder.
Becky Carter is Doug’s wife. She’s eight months pregnant with their first child and is a helper at Rainbow Rescues.
Pastor Herb Green and his wife Lorraine host monthly theme dances at the church. Pastor Green also officiates at pet memorial services at Rainbow Gardens.
Sandra Barry is the owner of the Buttercup Inn where both Brody and Gladys stay when they arrive in Cobble Cove for the reading of Maggie’s will. Sandra is a big supporter of Brody and doesn’t believe he’s guilty of killing his sister. She’s a divorcee with a grown son who lives in another town. During her marriage, she was a victim of spousal abuse and has a restraining order from her husband. She prepares healthy meals at the inn. Her specialties are smoothies.
Norman Dexter is Maggie’s lawyer. He and his wife, Joan, moved to Buttercup Bend two years ago. Since then, his practice has grown to include many Buttercup Bend residents including Cathy and her pet business.
Mildred Hastings, the librarian of the Buttercup Bend Library who owns the house where Nancy has a basement apartment.
A few other minor characters plus the pets, of course: Oliver, Cathy’s Siamese; Hobo, Nancy’s orange male cat; Max and Millie, Doug’s dogs; and Boots, Brian’s cat.
About The Book
After Buttercup Bend’s “Cat Crazy Lady,” Maggie Broom, is smothered to death in her home, Cathy Carter is stunned to learn that the animal shelter and pet cemetery she co-owns with her brother Doug is the recipient of the bulk of Maggie’s estate.
When Maggie’s estranged brother and sister come to town and are upset with the terms of their sister’s will, Sheriff Leroy Miller is convinced one of them killed Maggie.
At a baby shower Cathy’s grandmother holds for Doug’s wife, one of the guests turns up dead, and Cathy and her reporter friend, Nancy Meyers, set out to solve the murders.
