IR- What inspired the idea for your book?
DG- It’s a continuation of the series about a retired detective who moves to a small Caribbean Island and gets caught up in some ugly murder mysteries.
IR- What was the most surprising thing you learned in writing this book?
DG- Developing characters from a first-person point of view
IR- If you were friends with a character in this book, what kinds of things would you do together?
DG- Lots of diving, watching sunsets and probably drinking a few beers.
IR- What does it mean to you to be called an author?
DG- I’m still getting used to it, but I consider it a compliment.
IR- How do you define success as an author?
DG- People reading my books. The more people that read them, the more it means I’m having some level of effect on them, hopefully adding some enjoyment and entertainment to their lives.
IR- What comes first for you — the plot or the characters?
DG- The characters. For me, the plot is just a reason for the characters to exist.
IR- As an author what do you think makes a good story?
DG- Tension, realism, and a bit of humor. Also, problems. Real life isn’t perfect, so my characters have to have problems in theirs.
IR- Who is your audience?
DG- In general, anyone who reads mysteries. More specifically, my audience tends to be folks who like the Caribbean and especially those who are divers or snorkelers.
IR- What is an underrated series that you think everyone should read at least once?
DG- The Clare Carlson Series by R.G. Belsky.
IR- Aside from writing or reading, what are your hobbies or interests?
DG- Scuba diving, hiking, flying, banjo playing (music in general), trading stocks on the stock market.
IR- What are you working on in the near future?
The third book in the series, PARADISE LANDING.
IR- What advice would you give to a writer working on their first book?
DG- Don’t give up. It doesn’t matter how long it takes to finish, just keep at it. You’re doing it for yourself, not anyone else. Also, seek criticism from folks that will give honest feedback. It’s the hardest to listen to but will make you a better writer.
IR- What are your favorite books or authors?
Robert B. Parker
IR- What would the title of your autobiography be?
DG- “I’m ready to go, why aren’t you?”
IR- If you had a secret room that opened by pulling a book on a shelf, what book would you choose?
DG- Dante’s Inferno.
IR- If you went on a road trip with any author where would you go?
DG- I’d take JA Konrath, and we’d bar hope across Arkansas. The guy is a blast and I’m sure we’d end up in all kinds of weird situations.
IR- What is something you can do better than anyone else you know?.
DG- Play banjo.
IR- If you knew you could not fail, what would you do?
DG- I’d start over and be a military pilot.

Every day is paradise on Bonaire—until something unexpected washes ashore
On the laid-back island of Bonaire, every day is paradise until a seaweed-entangled human leg washes ashore. Combing the beach, retired cop Roscoe Conklin examines the scene and quickly determines that the leg belongs to the nephew of a close friend.
The island police launch an investigation, but with little evidence and no suspects, their progress comes to a frustrating halt. Then, thanks to a unique barter with the lead detective, Conklin finds himself in possession of the case file. He can now aggressively probe for his own answers.
Sifting through the scant clues, eager to bring the killer to justice, Conklin struggles to maintain forward momentum. He has all the pieces. He can feel it. But he’d better get them snapped together soon.
Otherwise, the body count will continue to rise.
