A Conversation with Princess Latifa of Destiny Falls

Hello Princess Latifa, welcome to IRWYW. It is no secret that cats enjoy sleeping the afternoon away in the warm sunshine. We appreciate you taking time from your catnap to talk with us. I know our readers are looking forward to getting to know you better.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your human, Hayden, and how you found yourselves living on a magical island?

Thank you for having me today. It’s nice to meet someone who understands who the true star of this series is. Me, of course! I found my voice when my girl Hayden and I landed in Destiny Falls. I mean that literally! When we were pushed through a mirror—oh sorry, that’s a long story—but when we arrived here, I found that I could communicate with Hayden! It’s kind of a telepathic trick, but it’s immensely helpful. I help her solve the mysteries here, and of course, I can also let her know when it’s time for a snack. (That’s equally important.)

Hayden has found her long lost family, that must be exciting for her, but you have found a family of your own. Will you share about Chanel and Lola?

Ah, yes! My lovely, lovely Chanel. The moment I saw her I knew she was special. She’s a glorious Persian vision with the most magnetic copper eyes and a purr that warms my heart. She’s the foundation to my sometimes wacky, quirky self. We both love old movies and naps in the sunshine, so it’s a blessing to have found her here.

Hayden and her friend found our little black fluffball, Lola in the bushes when she was a wee babe. Now she’s a flurry of energy and keeps me and Chanel on our toes.

It must be interesting to live in a magical place like Destiny Falls. What is your favorite thing about your adopted home?

This place is unreal! The house we live in, and the community are enchanted, so there’s never a dull moment, and I despise dull moments! You never know if you might meet a ghost or find an Alice in Wonderland themed party in your backyard.

Caldwell Crest seems to be a remarkable estate. Have you discovered a favorite room or kitty hidey space you enjoy spending time in?

Oh, there’s a magnificent movie room in the house where Chanel and I can spend lazy afternoons watching the greatest old movies! And there’s even a cat-friendly remote control, since I don’t have opposable thumbs, you know.

Hayden always looks so stylish, she credits your influence. Have you always been a fashion maven, or is it a new talent you discovered since coming to Destiny Falls?

If I take a break from old movies I love watching fashion shows! Project Runway is one of my favorites! Since I’m always attired in my glorious fur coat I don’t need to fret about fashion, but Hayden, oh, dear! She tends to toss on any old jeans and t-shirt—shudder at the thought!—so I have to dive into her closet and advise her on wardrobe choices. Not that I mind! It’s like having my very own dress-up doll. Oh, don’t tell her I said that.

I heard a rumor that you and your feline family belong to a secret crime solving club. Can you tell us a bit about that?

Ahh, you’ve heard of the SCS, have you? The Secret Cat Society. Since we’re stealthy, smart felines we can often figure out things before the humans do. Then we need to figure out how to communicate our brilliance to them and nudge them in the direction of solving the crime.

What do you really think about Han now that he and Hayden seem to be so much more than just friends?

Han-the-Hottie! Whoops, don’t tell Hayden I said that either, she told me not to call him that, but ohhh baby. He’s handsome, smart and has a killer smile. I mean that in the best way possible. And he’s stealthy and smart, just like me. Plus, he’s a man who loves and appreciates cats! She couldn’t do any better than this guy, let me tell you.

Has Elizabeth Pantley given you any hints as to what adventures await you and Hayden in the near future?

Oh, that’s right! You don’t know. She’s already finished writing our next adventure. I have to tell you, I get to wear a fan-tabulous costume in this one! And I get to ride on a boat! And I know a major secret that even Hayden doesn’t know. She’ll find out, of course, when the time is right. And that’s the fun part! Now if that dang editor would stop being so nit-picky about commas, quotation marks, and spelling, then you can read all about it.

What is one thing you really want us all to know?

I’d love to have you visit us in Destiny Falls. It’s the most magical, fascinating place on earth … um if it is on earth. Hayden and I still haven’t figured that out. But no matter, the enchantments, the fascinating people, the unbelievable events. Of course, there seems to always be a dead body lying around, and then the SCS and I have to help Hayden and her friends figure out what happened. It’s not as easy as when you find a dead mouse, that’s a pretty cut-and-dried case. But, like I said before, never a dull moment—but that’s good!

Witches, Spiders, and Schemes is book 4 in the Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic Series and it is just as much fun as the first. Destiny Falls’ enchantment seems to be faltering and Hayden has a theory on why that is happening. Meanwhile a couple of bodies tied to the ferry scandal are found floating in the bay, setting Hayden investigating more of the history of Destiny Falls and Gladstone.

All my favorite characters are front and center in this installment, doing what they do best. With so many questions left open since the series began, I was on the edge of each page hoping to finally get some answers. I feel Hayden’s frustration with how close TPTB holds information that could help her solve the various mysteries surrounding her. I am just glad my ereader didn’t turn into an Agatha Christie novel (not that I wouldn’t enjoy reading it, LOL).  I was surprised by my emotional investment in the wellbeing of the enchanted island and I am loving the developing romance. I cannot wait for the next book. I might be enjoying this just a little too much.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

I was also given the chance to review the audiobook for Falling Into Magic, the first book in the series. I found it to be great fun. The narration by Emily Goss is spot on and even though I have read the book twice I found myself pulled into the action easily. It was quite enjoyable.

My teen, totally intrigued by Latifa’s interview above, listened in and now he is dying to read the rest of the series. It should be noted that he is a high brow Sci Fi snob and as such would never lower himself to read for fun fantasy or cozies, despite being the sounding board for dozens of my reviews for both over the years. First, he is a cat person and is crushing hard on Latifa’s sass (brilliantly portrayed in the audiobook, if I may say so). Plus, he is still trying to wrap his head around the technical aspect of a supernatural island tamping down on information to keep itself secret. Whatever gets him to read/listen and enjoy, I won’t complain. This series is time well spent.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I received advance review copies for free through Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours and Elizabeth Pantley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily

A magic mirror to an enchanted world… A mysterious ghost… A hilarious, perpetually annoyed witch… A brave, sassy cat… Two unexplained deaths and a mysterious community filled with secrets… Can Hayden and the people of Destiny Falls solve the mystery and return the community to its peaceful, enchanted existence?

Hayden’s adventures in Destiny Falls continue in book four of the Destiny Falls Mystery & Magic series. Starting with a strange old woman at a cave and her father’s mysterious ferry journey, there are secrets to be unwound.

The enchantments in Destiny Falls are showing cracks, and Hayden suspects that it is tied directly to her family, which has a history that’s more complex than she realized. When two bodies are found floating in the bay it’s clear that the mysteries surrounding Gladstone and the ferry are more dangerous than people realize. And then . . . those spiders.

Luckily, Hayden and her sassy sidekick, Latifa have developed a group of family and friends in this enchanted place who are all ready and willing to help solve the mystery, and release Destiny Falls to resume its normal, amazing, enchanted existence.

Hayden’s many adventures in Destiny Falls will keep you guessing with each book in this intriguing series.
