A Conversation with Kari Bovee Author of Grace in Hollywood

Can Grace turn the camera on the real culprit before another victim ends up on the cutting room floor? — Grace in Hollywood – A Grace Michelle Mystery by Kari Bovee

What inspired the idea for your book?

This is the second book in the series. At the end of the first book, Grace in the Wings, Grace makes a move to Los Angeles. Since she was a costume designer on Broadway in NYC in the first book, it only made sense she would continue her costume design career in the silent films of Hollywood. In my research of film in the early 1920s, I stumbled across a story about the murder of producer/director Thomas Ince. Although the murder in my book is quite a departure from this story, I thought the idea behind the murder of a director intriguing.

Tell us about your favorite character from the book.

In this book, Grace encounters a spiritualist and medium, Lenora Lange. With all the losses of the Great War (1914 – 1918) and even more losses with the Spanish Flu Pandemic (1919) people turned to mediums to try to reconnect with lost loved ones. I thought it would work perfectly in my book as Grace endured plenty of loss as a young girl, and then later in life when her sister was murdered (Grace in the Wings). It was a fun idea to explore, and Lenora sort of appeared on the page one day as this ethereal being who has become ensconced with the Hollywood set. She was tremendously fun to write.

What does it mean to you to be called an author?

This is a great question. For me, doing something I love while providing entertainment, inspiration, and education for others is a definite measure of success. I’ve pondered the question of ‘why am I doing this?’ for several years and the answer always comes back to connection. I love making a connection with the people who enjoy my books. It’s like meeting someone for the first time and finding out you have so many things in common. I love knowing that I’ve touched someone in a positive way and have given them some enjoyment.

How do you interact with your readers?

Usually through email and social media. I love getting emails from readers. I also have a Facebook group and enjoy some interaction there. I’ve thought of having some Zoom meetings as well, but haven’t started that yet. I think it would be fun to have some face time with readers to talk about all sorts of things.

Aside from writing or reading, what are your hobbies or interests?

I’ve had horses since I was a young girl. I competed for years in many disciplines but now I just enjoy spending time riding, either by myself or with friends. I’ve been practicing natural horsemanship for the last ten years and have really enjoyed learning about horse psychology and behavior. Studying this has made me a much more competent partner for my horses and a better human being in general. I also love doing lots of artsy/craftsy things. I find if I’m stuck on a story problem, or how a character would react to something in the plot of one of my books, I find that this kind of activity opens up my creativity. In the past year I’ve also taken up golf and I’ve learned to play Mah Jongg.

What are you working on now or in the near future?

Right now I am working on the third book in the Grace Michelle mystery series titled Grace Among Thieves. I hope to release it early next year. Then, I have plans to start a new series; this one a historical cozy paranormal series that takes place in a small Colorado mining town in the 1890s. I have the protagonist and some of the secondary characters outlined and the basic story theme for each book in the series—so, in reference to the question above, this series has started with the theme, then story premise for each book in conjunction with the characters. I’m really excited about it and can’t wait to start working on it in 2022.

Is there a better setting for a classic whodunnit than 1920’s Hollywood? Grace Michelle is a costume designer for a new movie. When a director ends up dead at a party at her house one of her foster kids is implicated Grace goes into sleuth mode.

While this story immerses the reader into that time period, the true center of the story are the myriad of well written and vibrant characters that Grace interacts with.  She is smart and motivated and pulls those around her to higher levels.

There are plenty of layers to the story, with lots of twists and plot turns and much going on to keep the reader enthralled. It is an excellent addition to the series and a wonderful taste of what is to come.

Book Description:

A ghost from her past. Her sister murdered. Can Grace slay her demons and find the killer before she ends up dead?

New York City, 1920. Grace Michelle has everything she wants: a home, a family, and a future career as a costume designer for famed showman Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr.’s Ziegfeld Follies. Pretty good for a girl who once lived on the streets of New York City. But when her sister, Sophia, the star of the show, is murdered, Grace’s safe and protected life is shattered.

Battle-scarred by the war and emotionally scarred by his past, Chet Riker has made it a practice to keep his distance from others; love, after all, leads only to pain. But Chet has a problem—a big one: he’s become indebted to mob-boss Joe Marciano in an attempt to save his estranged mother’s life, and Marciano wants him to pay up or else. Desperate to get the money, he contacts former client Florenz Ziegfeld for work.

Soon, Chet finds himself playing bodyguard for introverted Grace, who has reluctantly agreed to be Ziegfeld’s new leading lady—on the condition that Ziegfeld promises to find Sophia’s killer. Upon meeting Grace, Chet quickly finds his hardened theory that love equals pain tested. Grace, meanwhile, is swept up in a life she never wanted as the Follies’ star, and as the pawn in a series of publicity stunts during a transcontinental train trip to California that puts her life at risk. Who would want her and Sophia dead? Together, she and Chet must confront publicity-hungry Florenz Ziegfeld, power-driven Joe Marciano, and their own pasts to find Sophia’s killer—and let themselves love once again.
