Book Review: Paws for Alarm (A Canine Confections Mystery) by Amy Hueston

Suddenly Samantha finds herself in a race against time to find not only the thief, but a murderer — Paws for Alarm (A Canine Confections Mystery) by @HuestonAmy

Criminal mischief is afoot on Worth Avenue and Samantha is in the thick of it once again. Book two in the Canine Confections Mystery series by Amy Hueston, Paws for Alarm, is as much of a “fun little mystery” for me as the first one was.

Sam and the other shop owners have their hands full. Small items are being stolen from the shops, strange people are showing up at odd times and another murder has occurred, bringing out the macabre and the looky-loos, but not so many legitimate customers. On the personal side, Sam is worried about her aunt and is having to fend off the unwanted attention of her cheating, uber charming ex-boyfriend.

While murder starts the story, but the book reads more like a soap opera than a cozy with its interwoven and ongoing plotlines. Quirky characters both recurring and new keep it fresh. Sam’s inner circle of friends are the best sidekicks. They don’t pull any punches with their snark and will keep the reader fully engaged. In the last book, aunt Mary was my favorite character and I believe she still is though she plays a smaller role in this book. I can see a lot of her in Samantha.

I am looking forward to more books in this fun series. This book will read well as a standalone, however, I think that reading from the beginning of the series will provide a colorful background for the reader.

When Samantha relaxes into her new role as a dog mom, finds a circle of friends in her new hometown, and sees her new dog bakery Canine Confections barking up business, she’s thrilled that things are going so well … until she hears a bloodcurdling scream from the pastry shop two doors down and runs over to find a dead body on the floor.

Suddenly Samantha finds herself in a race against time to find not only the thief who is stealing from the upscale shops, but a murderer, too. Samantha’s Lab-Mix Sweet Pea wags her tail through all of the clues, suspects and shenanigans. Both Samantha and Sweet Pea are aided in their amateur investigation by the other shopkeepers on the elegant Worth Avenue, and Samantha finds the suspect list growing at every turn.

To make matters worse, Samantha’s old boyfriend arrives in town, and mysterious people start showing up at the Sophisticated Pet and New Age stores nearby. Samantha soon finds that things are not what they seem, and she must figure out what’s going on—or become the next dead body on a bakery floor.
