Behind the scenes with Kristie Larson
by D.E. Haggerty
You’re probably wondering why I, Kristie Larson, get my own story in Trick or Thief. I already told the story of how I caught a very bad man in Self-Serve Murder. But I’m no longer working full-time at the bakery, I’m not obsessed with cupcakes, and I’m not a cupcake baker. In fact, I wouldn’t know how to bake a cupcake even if I cheated and used a mix. But, sshhh, don’t tell Anna Banana. She’d lose her mind.
On the surface, it may seem as though I’m no longer one of those Callie’s Cakes cupcake girls. Nothing could be further from the truth. I still work at the bakery once a week, and Callie, Anna, and I get together every Sunday for brunch and to catch up with each other. So, yeah, I’m still very much one of the cupcake girls.
You may be wondering why I’m not full-time working at the bakery any longer. After all, I worked there all throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies. Well, exciting news!, I passed my board exams and am now an officially licensed social worker. Yeah! Now I’ve finally got that piece of extremely precious paper, I am working full-time at the Youth Center I helped build.
Usually, my days are filled with helping the teenagers who come to the center. Right now, however, I’ve got big problems. Stuff is going missing from my storage room despite my elaborate security system. If the licensing authorities find out, the Youth Center may be done for.
Of course, Lucy and Ethel, aka Anna and Callie, won’t let that happen. Nope. Anna, cupcakes included, dives right into the mystery. Someone hold her back before she creates more trouble than she’s trying to solve!

About The Book:
Trick or Thief: A Humorous Culinary Cozy Mystery Short Read
(Death by Cupcake)
A little haunting sounds like innocent fun until a ghost plunders your stockroom.
Kristie is convinced ghosts don’t exist until food starts disappearing without a trace from the Youth Center storage. There are zero clues as to who’s been inside the building. The security guard hasn’t seen a thing, and the security tapes are mysteriously blank. When the ghost widens his hocus-pocus to include Kristie’s office, the gals of Callie’s Cakes jump in to find the culprit before Kristie can get in a whole mess of spooky trouble.
Will the gals of Callie’s Cakes expose the ghost before Kristie’s facility is destroyed?
Cupcakes not included, although recipes for all the delicious cupcakes Anna bakes are.

Trick or Thief is the sixth book in the Death by Cupcake series. It is always a good time visiting with the ladies from Callie’s Cakes. Kristie is still trying to be the sane one, while Anna dives headfirst into adventure dragging Callie along for the ride.
It is Halloween and Kristie has opened her youth center and on the surface things are great. She is helping kids who would have nowhere else to go. Still, she has a mystery on her hands when the security cameras stop recording and food begins to go missing from the center’s pantry in the early hours of the morning when there is no guard onsite.
Trying to keep Anna and Callie from investigating the mystery is a lot like trying to eat only one of Anna’s spooktacular cupcakes. Kristie isn’t very good at doing either. Truth be told, she doesn’t try very hard. The clues keep coming and become even more baffling (and destructive). The ladies need to solve it before one of them gets hurt or their men ( two police detectives and a fireman) cross the line into overprotective mode.
This is a quick easy read. Humor and romance are promised and, of course, as always, they along with a fun mystery are delivered. Also included are recipes for all of Anna’s mouthwatering cupcake creations along with the opening chapter of book seven in the series due out around Valentine’s Day, (which I have already preordered).
Speaking of… Dena shared Anna’s recipe for Ghost Cupcakes in her newsletter this week and gave me permission to share it with you. Who wouldn’t love to sink their teeth into this adorably spooky confection?

About The Author:
D.E. Haggerty is actually just plain old Dena, but she thinks using initials makes her sound sophisticated and maybe even grown-up. She was born and raised in the U.S. but considers herself a Dutchie and not only because it sounds way cooler. After a stint in the U.S. Army, she escaped the US to join her husband in Holland. She fled Holland over ten years ago when she couldn’t stand the idea of being a lawyer for one single second more. Turns out Bed & Breakfast owner in Germany didn’t do it for her either. When the hubby got a job in Istanbul, she jumped ship and decided to give this whole writer thing a go. She’s now back in Holland, which she considers home. Sorry, Mom.

Thanks for reading and reviewing. I hope you try the cupcakes (and your frosting works out better than mine did). I’m now anxiously awaiting the shipment of Halloween candy at the expat store.
