Mollie Hunt, author of Cosmic Cat, a Crazy Cat Lady cozy mystery #6

GuestWhen I first opened my Facebook Author Page, I needed to come up with a bio for the “Our Story” section. I wrote: Mollie Hunt. Loves cats. Writes books. That covers it pretty well.

I wrote my first cat story in fourth grade about my big Maine Coon cat whom I was going to marry when I came of age. Skip ahead fifty years to my Crazy Cat Lady cozy mystery series. Maybe not so imaginatively romantic as marrying one’s kitty, the series is much more exciting, featuring Lynley Cannon, a sixty-something cat shelter volunteer who finds more trouble than a cat in catnip. Cosmic Cat (When a superhero cosplayer falls to his death at a comic con, Lynley is left holding the bag— and a cat!) is the 6th in the series, and I’m now working on the 7th and 8th. My ideas for dear Lynley are endless, she is such a fun character to write.

I’m also writing a cat sci-fantasy tetralogy, with the first book, Cat Summer (Cats save the world from an evil older than history— twice!), recently published. I’ve issued a little book of cat poems, a few cat short stories, and, well, you get the picture.

When I’m not writing or napping with my cats Blaze, Tyler, and Ginchan, I like to bead, read, and watch cozy mysteries on TV. I’m blessed to have a supportive husband who knows to leave me alone when I’m writing and is kind enough to carry my books.

Leo Review sm
A coterie of kitties, cosplaying eco-activists, and murder. Lynley has a heck of a mystery to solve, but just when she thinks she’s got it, it turns out to be someone else.

This was a well-paced mystery read with plenty to keep the reader occupied. Each chapter begins with a cat tip or a loved recipe that fits into the following prose in interesting ways. This was a story written by a cat lover and it shows through in the story.

I wouldn’t call Lynley a crazy cat lady, though it is hinted at several times throughout the story, she is a little bit crazy and she loves cats and that fits so well in the story. Had I been I asked, I would have sworn there was no way to include costumed vigilantes in a cozy and have it be anything but ridiculous. Yet, after reading this, my hat is off to the author for writing the plot into a cozy with skill and panache. As with any good cozy sleuth, Lynley is made better by the company she keeps, the characters in this story do not disappoint and their own stories add a fine leavening to the ongoing mystery.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

About The Book:

Cosmic Cat (Crazy Cat Lady Mystery Book 6) by Mollie Hunt

cosmic catWhen a superhero cosplayer falls to his death at a comic con, Lynley is left holding the bag– and a cat!

Who killed Captain Cat? His tribe wants to know.

When the Captain is murdered at Bridgetown Comic-con and philanthropist Esmae Westhouse is arrested for the crime, sixty-something cat shelter volunteer Lynley Cannon steps out of her comfort zone and dons her Star Trek uniform to expose the real killer.

A decade-spanninglove triangle, a band of vigilante cosplayers, a shady pharmaceutical company, and an ancient black cat named Kitty tie into a puzzling plot that has Lynley running in all directions. The death of Captain Cat is only the beginning, and Lynley must stay one step ahead of a ruthless hit man if she is to make it out alive.

The 3rd in the series, CAT’S PAW, was a finalist for the 2016 Mystery & Mayhem Book Award, and the 5th, CAT CAFÉ, won the World’s Best Cat Litter-ary Award in 2019.

Mollie’s sci-fantasy, CAT SUMMER (Fire Star Press) is the first in her CAT SEASONS TETRALOGY where cats save the world from an evil older than history—twice! Mollie also published a non-cat mystery, PLACID RIVER RUNS DEEP, which delves into murder, obsession, and the challenge of chronic illness in bucolic southwest Washington. Two of her short cat stories have been published in anthologies, one of which, THE DREAM SPINNER, won the prestigious CWA Muse Medallion. She has a little book of Cat Poems as well.
