I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage every once in a while to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.

Name three fun facts about you or your work.

D.E.- 1. Although I fancy myself the next Serena Williams, I’m actually a very clumsy tennis player. I often wake up the day after a match with bruises on my left arm (I’m right-handed) because I whacked myself in the arm instead of hitting the ball. In my world, tennis is a full contact sport.

2. I’m a complete nerd. Like, totally and undeniably nerdsville. Case in point – when I was in elementary school I thought the eye test was really a test and not a vision check. I memorized the entire eye chart to make sure I ‘passed’. Only when a teacher overheard me bragging about knowing the chart frontwards and backwards was it discovered that I have really bad vision (which explains the ridiculous amounts of stitches I had as a child from running into things).

3. I’m a bit of a control freak. Yeah, only a bit because it’s possible to be a control freak part-time (sarcasm intended). I can’t stand being in a car driven by someone else. The only reason I handle taxi rides in Istanbul so well is because they’re really carnival rides. I’m serious. Driving way over the speed limit in a car with bald tires while passing on the right from the emergency lane is not driving. Traffic signs in Istanbul are advisory only.

Lian – Great Facts! You play a much better tennis game than I do. My tennis seems to be a no contact sport, I get lots of exercise running after the ball though. I can totally relate to being a nerd, that was such funny story! Living in another country is really cool, but living in a country like Istanbul must be supercool. I would love to travel a lot someday. Oh, and around my house we call it “Control Enthusiast.”

 

Apart from writing and reading, what are your other hobbies or interests?

You mean there’s something besides reading and writing? When the weather’s sunny and not too hot, I’ll take a break to play a game of tennis. When my tennis partner is off traveling, I’ll hit the gym up for an awkward run on the treadmill. If the hubby’s not off transporting cattle over the rainbow, I’ll put down my book for a movie or a board game; both activities usually involve drinking copious amounts of adult beverages. I also like to travel and explore new cities and countries. Of course, I do usually have a book in my hand when I’m exploring. I’m a total history geek and love travel guides with tons of background information.

-I would totally be the person with the guide book. Plus my mom and I would have printed up a bunch of stuff from online to go with it.

 

If you could go on a road trip with any author, dead or alive, who would it be, and where would you go?

I’m going to have to say Agatha Christie. In addition to being a great mystery writer, she traveled all over the world and must have some great stories as an archaeologist’s wife. And maybe I could finally learn the truth behind her disappearance. She’d probably make me pinky swear not to tell anyone, but I’m okay with that. It’s not telling if it’s a ‘fictional’ story, right?

-I’ll never tell!! I think Doctor Who had a great take on her disappearance. She probably would be a fun person to hang out with.

 

How do you write your books?

I’m just going to go ahead and admit I’m a planner. I am a recovering attorney after all. I have a journal for each book I write. I fill it with character notes, clues, and plot ideas. Of course, I also have a copious amount of sticky notes in all shapes, sizes, and colors which I’m continually sticking all over to remind myself of this or that. The plethora of notes all over my desk and computer make it look like my head is all over the place, but it’s organized chaos.

-I couldn’t live without post it notes. I even got a desk set for my birthday that has 8 different colors in four sizes all wrapped up in a leather cover. It is important to organize your chaos.

 

 How do you avoid or defeat writers block?

That’s an easy one. Just. Keep. Writing. It doesn’t matter what you write: a blog article, a lengthy Facebook post, a chapter in a book you’re only now starting to think about (or even a fun interview with a cool blog!). You just need to keep the creative juices flowing.

-That is the most common advice I get and it must work pretty well since those authors’ books get lots of five star reviews.
